Ultrasonic Examination of Cylinders (UE)

CMS is now a fully certified DOT Ultrasonic Examination (UE) test facility able to test both steel and aluminium gas cylinders based on the following cylinder specifications; DOT 3A, 3AA, 3AL, ISO 9801-1 and 9801-2 of various sizes and pressure up to 50L cylinders.

Cylinders are periodically inspected and tested to evaluate its integrity. Ultrasonic examination (UE) is a popular and reliable test method for portable gas cylinders.

UE offers minimum down time and limited to zero risk of contamination since residuals do not need to be drained, cylinders are not de-valved thus not exposing the cylinder to moisture or contaminants. It also provides a more detailed analysis than the standard hydrotest. It is also not affected by a temperature change like a hydrotest.

The cylinder qualifications are carried out according to:

  • ISO 6406 Gas cylinders – Seamless steel gas cylinders – Periodic inspection and testing
  • ISO 10461 Gas cylinders – Seamless aluminium-alloy gas cylinders – Periodic inspection and testing
  • DOT SP 14149 Ultrasonic examination of aluminium 3AL high pressure cylinders
  • DOT SP 14206 Ultrasonic examination of steel 3A, 3AA high pressure cylinders
  • IMCA D018 Detail Sheet 9.1 Seamless gas cylinders and pressure vessels not taken under water – Dry internal service
